Pope affirms family in World Day of Peace message

Pope Benedict XVI has today released his message for the 41st World Day of Peace which takes place on 1 January 2008.

In his address, The Human Family, a Community of Peace, the Holy Father says that the world's people are "called to build relationships of solidarity and cooperation among themselves, as befits members of the one human family."

He goes on to affirm the family as "the first and indispensable teacher of peace".

The message relates family values to the economy, the environment and humanity as a whole.

Pope Benedict also refers to the need for "effective demilitarization" especially in the area of nuclear arms.
